Mugunga III is an internally-displaced people's (IDP) camp situated near Goma, Democratic Republic of the Congo - a space marked by two decades of conflict, crises, and humanitarian response. Through a set of collaboratively-composed portraits, this exhibition engages debates about the agency of the photographic subject, visual ethics, the social politics of humanitarian images.
Each week from January to August 2014, I interviewed camp residents and asked them to contribute to their photographs by directing my camera. Understanding that I would publish these images and that they would get to keep a copy, residents determined the location, pose, and props to be included. I added the composition, focal length, and angle. While exploring the particularities and desires of the individuals featured, this exhibition also charts a shift in image content and affect that speaks to the social dynamics across - not just in front of - the lens. What begin as humanitarian-like images of suffering transition into proud local studio-like images. Such metamorphoses reflect changes not only in the subject, photographer, and their relationship, but also in the subjects’ expectations of the resulting photographs. - www.AubreyGrahamPhotography.com
