This exhibition investigates and challenges the power and impact of myths on today's culture. The opening and closing weekend features a night of performance and Tableaux Vivant depicting the myth of Briar Rose, known as Sleeping Beauty. Their contemporary version is based on 3 traditional stories and 19th century paintings.
Their purpose is to twist the tale and empower "the other" who have long been disrespected. The tableau depicts a princess in her bedchamber, her defilement, the subsequent bearing of two children, and the return of the prince expecting to be greeted with open arms. A twisted ending gives our princess a much more 21st century reaction to being abused.
Both Barron and Hill place their art within a postmodern doctrine with subject matter extracted from art history and literature to reflect on a more diverse modern day society. Their narrative style of painting and photography is influenced by allegory, history, religion, and mythology in which symbolism is a major component.
This is a 2 week exhibition free and open to the public featuring paintings and photography based on tableaux Barron and Hill have built together in the past year. Tiny Scissors will be playing at both events . The opening is free and open to the public, the closing reception event is $10 in advance per ticket available for purchase at thenexusaxiom.com/
