Collodion is an exploration into wet plate collodion photography as a result of the photographer’s view of how disconnected we have become with photography in the digital age. Everything in digital photography is completely constructed out of non-physical elements from capture to print, it is all communicated via RGB mathematics. With wet plate collodion there is a lot of physical interaction not only with the chemicals, but with the photographer’s relationship to them. Whether it is the final plate, or the chemical stains left on the photographer’s hands, the process has a presence, one that is easily recognizable. This body of work focuses on portraiture due to the fact that the lengthy exposures also change our perception of the traditional sharp image most of us try to achieve within our photography. The result of the final image is an object which depicts a unique portrait that expresses presence of process and a fluid representation of the subject.
