Fernbank Forest: Designed by Nature

Fernbank Museum of Natural History

Featuring work by: Peter Essick

This exhibition features the work of Peter Essick, a widely recognized master photographer and creator of 44 major National Geographic articles. He was commissioned to execute a two-year study of this unique Atlanta asset.

Fernbank Forest is one of the largest old-growth urban Piedmont forests in the country and serves as a significant reminder of our natural heritage. Fernbank Museum of Natural History’s goal is to connect people with nature while helping visitors of all ages achieve a greater understanding of and appreciation for the environment.

Fernbank’s recent intensive restoration effort has created a healthier ecosystem throughout the forest, at the same time offering breathtaking views of champion trees, dramatic topography, incredible wildlife, colorful wildflowers and one of the cleanest streams in the country. This restoration work allows Fernbank to further its educational mission through new programs that disseminate critical knowledge about biological diversity, plant and animal survival, and the active role humans can play in protecting the earth and all life.

The exhibition reflects the powerful design characteristics of this living urban forest--one in balance with its environment.
