The exhibition considers the genre of performance and photography/video: its origin in the personal body; its influence within the arts and our culture, and its evolution since it formally arrived in the 1960’s as protest and commentary.

Panel discussion will include select artists from exhibition and will be moderated by Gregory Harris, Assistant Curator of Photography, The High Museum of Art.

Participating artists include:
Marilyn Minter, an artist who uses hypersexualized images of women to examine their roles in our culture as both objects and subjects, and to assert the power that emanates from these roles.

LaToya Ruby Frazier who creates documentary photographs and videos of herself and her family in adverse political and economic conditions as a personal expression of the fight for social justice, racial equality and cultural change.

Adrian Piper uses racial ambiguity and femininity to create text and images that examine ostracism and otherness in our culture.

Deborah Bright photographer, scholar and professor of photography and history of visual art and visual culture at RISD and Pratt attests that performance is “not an Ivory Tower” and that if it’s good “there is graphic form with telling content.” Her works explore LGBT issues and their lively, disturbing insertion into conservative formats.

Pixy Yijun Liao role plays male attitude and performance in intimate images of gender reversal within her domestic relationship.

Cheryl Pope, who studied under Nick Cave, creates powerful images of loss of power, and life, in an inequitable society.

Kerry Skarbakka documents his performances of male aggression in fight scenes, survivalist fantasies, and cultural realities.
